Strong start for Cakeland crew
Lakeland’s Explore co-ordinator Lizzie Wyatt reflects on a promising debut
The new Cakeland crew: Susan (left), Sharolyn, Lizzie, Katie and Peri
Explore team Cakeland had an excellent first outing of the year at Lancaster John O’ Gaunt on Sunday. Having taken up rowing just two weeks earlier by joining our adult learn-to-row course, Peri and Katie threw themselves straight into racing and absolutely smashed it, with the whole crew putting together five strong, balanced races against some tough opponents.
We started with back-to-back contests against mixed crews from Sheffield then John O’ Gaunt. This settled the first race nerves but, ultimately, the experience and power of our opponents showed and both pulled away from the start.
After refuelling from the excellent selection of wraps, cakes and scones on offer, we took to the water once again to face Sheffield ladies and Trafford men. Sheffield ladies always bring a strong crew, but with confidence growing, we weren't far behind them, pushing right to the end.
In the race against Trafford men, we really got the boat flying, staying within a length and giving them a good run for their money. Unluckily for us, Susan in stroke suffered a blade jumping the gate towards the end of the race, but Peri, suddenly finding herself in the new stroke seat, kept us together over the line, with Susan providing a blade wave to the spectators.
Being Cakeland, we never miss an opportunity for baked goods, so we had another slice before our final race, against Windermere. With four performances to be proud of under our belts, we gave it our best, but our opponents took it by a couple of lengths.
All in all, it was a great day out, introducing our newbies to the fun racing that Explore offers and a solid performance from all the crew – Susan, Sharolyn, Peri, Katie and Lizzie – with the much appreciated help of guest cox Conrad from Hollingworth RC.
With all summer to build on skills, racing and involve more learn-to-row graduates keen to try some friendly competition, the 2025 Explore series is looking to be another cracker!
