Club gets new boats to count on

Councillor Lansbury at the naming ceremony with committee members

Two additions to the Lakeland fleet have been named to reflect the club’s location and community roots.

The boats – a sculling double and a quad – were christened Tyan and Methera, two and four in Cumbrian dialect, names voted for by members.

The purchase was possible thanks to funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, administered by Cumberland Council through its Lakes to Sea community panel.

Cumberland Councillor Sally Lansbury carried out the christening ceremony, designed to welcome the boats to the water and ensure they and their crews enjoy good luck and safe travels.

She said, “Lakeland Rowing Club is a great example of what enthusiasm, ingenuity, hard work and determination can achieve. With just a few shipping containers to work from and based on the Isthmus, members past and present have created a thriving club to provide rowing opportunities for Keswick’s community.

“I congratulate the current committee and fundraising team for their successful purchase of these two new vessels. The club is providing wonderful opportunities for local people.”
