Wins on the Wirral for Cakeland
Explore co-ordinator Lizzie Wyatt reports on the latest event in the series, hosted by Liverpool Victoria RC
Winning team (from left): Vix, Maddie, super cox Heather, Peri and Lizzie
The Cakeland crew had their most successful day of the season so far, rowing on the Wirral.
After a strong start for Vix Gibson, Maddie Wagstaff, Peri Collins and me, with back-to-back wins against fellow ladies’ teams from Trafford and Runcorn, we refuelled at the BBQ.
Race three wasn’t our finest hour. We worked hard to stay level with a mixed Liverpool crew, but a couple of crabs later, they pulled away to the line. We recovered well and kept the boat moving.
Unperturbed, we returned to the start to take on City of Sheffield’s Ladies who Launch, who have been dominating women’s Explore racing this year. A close contest ensued, but some very tidy, powerful racing from Cakeland ensured we crossed the line over a length in front.
The multi-talented Heather, president of LVRC, event organiser and ukulele supremo, did a brilliant job of coxing us, and big thanks go to Vix for driving. And, don’t worry, I didn’t go a whole Explore event without any baked goods – I managed to squeeze in a slice of carrot cake before we headed home!
